Market Commentary

Stocks are trading with a cautious, defensive tilt Tuesday as the recent AI-led rebound loses steam. The S&P 500 is fractionally lower at 7679.79 (-0.14%) and the Nasdaq Composite is the relative laggard at -0.44%, weighed by softness in megacap technology where AAPL (-1.01%) and AMD (-1.19%) are leading the group down 0.71%. The Dow is bucking the trend, up 0.03% to 51983.96, reflecting the clear rotation into value and defensives. Overseas markets set a heavier tone, with the Nikkei 225 (-1.30%) and Hang Seng (-1.32%) both sliding and European bourses broadly in the red (DAX -0.75%, Euro Stoxx 50 -0.87%).

The standout macro story is crude oil, which is cratering 3.89% to $99.63 a barrel. Despite the drop in the commodity, the energy equity complex is the top-performing sector at +1.34%, with integrateds XOM (+0.85%) and CVX (+0.96%) firm and refiners MPC (+1.50%) and VLO (+1.08%) leading as lower feedstock costs support crack-spread expectations. The defensive playbook is otherwise in full view: consumer staples (+0.74%, WMT +1.31%), healthcare (+0.69%, LLY +1.18%) and utilities (+0.27%) are all catching a bid, while cyclical pockets of industrials sag on GE (-3.95%) and CAT (-1.90%).

The economic data flow has done little to encourage risk-taking. Housing Starts tumbled 5.2% month-over-month to 1.221M, a sharp miss versus the +1.9% consensus, and Monday's NAHB Housing Market Index slid to 29 against a 32 forecast — both pointing to continued strain in a sector still contending with MBA 30-year mortgage rates near 7.5%. Building Permits were roughly in line at 1.4M. Weekly ADP data showed a modest 18.5K print. Traders now turn to this afternoon's Pending Home Sales and the API crude inventory read (consensus -1.3M) for incremental direction.

The calendar is the dominant near-term variable, with the FOMC decision on October 28 looming large. Prediction markets are pricing an 88% probability of no change, keeping the target at 4.0%, and a striking 97% probability of zero additional cuts across all of 2026 — a decidedly hawkish hold narrative that is weighing on duration-sensitive growth names. The Fed's path will be informed by the 10/29 GDP and Core PCE releases, with PCE YoY expected to tick up to 3.6%. This week's megacap earnings slate — headlined by Tesla and Meta — represents the other key catalyst, and with the AI rebound stalling, results will need to justify stretched valuations.

Options positioning underscores the caution. SPY ATM implied volatility sits at 13.1% with an IV rank of 51, while the 25-delta skew of 5.0% and a 1.38 put/call volume ratio reflect active downside hedging. Importantly, dealers remain in a confirmed negative-gamma regime (GEX -9121M per 1% move, P(long gamma) just 10%), meaning hedging flows are positioned to amplify rather than dampen intraday swings. The zero-gamma pivot sits near 771 with the call wall at 770 and put-wall support at 760 — levels worth watching as the session develops. Expect choppy, headline-sensitive trade with a floor of defensive demand into the FOMC.
