Thursday's tape is a tale of two markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is powering ahead +0.91% to 52,091 and the S&P 500 holds a modest +0.16% gain at 7,731, but the Nasdaq Composite is slipping -0.25% to 26,626 as the semiconductor complex extends its sell-off. AMD (-3.71%), AVGO (-1.90%) and NVDA (-1.72%) are the visible wounds, with headlines tying the weakness to fresh AI overspending concerns linked to Anthropic. Strong Taiwan Semiconductor earnings are cushioning the blow but not reversing the risk-reduction in the highest-multiple names. Notably, NQ futures are off -0.70% versus firmer Dow futures (+0.86%), underscoring the rotation dynamic rather than a wholesale de-risking.
The macro backdrop turned decidedly hotter this morning. September PPI printed a blistering +1.3% MoM against a +0.5% consensus, with the YoY rate jumping to +6.3% (vs +5.3% expected) and core PPI running +0.7% MoM and +5.0% YoY. That follows Wednesday's firm CPI, where headline inflation accelerated to +3.7% YoY and core held at +2.6%. Retail sales were a mixed but solid report — headline +0.8% and ex-autos +0.9% beat, though the control group softened to +0.1%. The combination of sticky prices and a resilient consumer has pushed the rates narrative in a hawkish direction: Polymarket now assigns a 28% probability to a 25 bps rate increase at the October 28 FOMC, and markets overwhelmingly (97%) see zero cuts for all of 2026. The NQ's intraday correlations reflect the sensitivity, running -0.79 (session) inverse to the 10-year note.
Beneath the index headlines, the leadership is classic late-cycle value and defensive rotation. Healthcare is the standout at +2.39%, powered by LLY (+4.74%) and UNH (+3.92%). Consumer Discretionary (+2.11%) is riding retail strength in HD (+3.25%) and MCD (+1.88%), while Financials (+1.19%) are supported by the payment networks V (+2.12%) and MA (+1.82%). Communication Services (+1.56%) is holding up on NFLX (+3.45%). The laggards are Energy (-1.42%), where XOM (-1.36%) and VLO (-3.26%) are lower despite a much larger-than-expected 8.6M-barrel EIA crude draw that has pushed WTI up +1.46% to $96.48, and Technology (-0.38%). Gold's +1.45% advance to $4,167 reflects a bid for inflation and geopolitical hedges, with the metal fully decoupled from equities intraday (rolling +0.01).
Positioning signals suggest contained but cautious risk. SPY ATM implied vol sits at a benign 10.7% with IV rank at 26, and the implied move for the nearest expiry is just ±0.6%. However, the put/call volume ratio of 1.17 and a 25-delta skew bid of 1.8% flag some downside hedging demand. The GEX picture is in flux — dealers had been confirmed long gamma over eight sessions, but today's read flipped negative (-5,996M per 1% move), with zero-gamma, the call wall and the put wall all clustered near 770 on SPY. A break of that pin could amplify intraday swings in either direction.
Looking ahead, Friday brings Industrial Production and Import/Export Prices, with a Fed Chair Warsh speech on the calendar. The dominant catalyst now looms at the October 28 FOMC, where consensus still expects rates held at 4.0% but the hawkish inflation surprises have put a hike firmly back on the table as a tail risk. Until then, expect the market's split personality to persist — rotation out of crowded AI/semis into value and defensives — unless the semiconductor group stabilizes or incoming data cools the reaccelerating inflation story.
