Daily Market Briefing

October 13, 2026

A classic rotation Tuesday: the Dow outperforms at +0.84% (52,287) while the Nasdaq lags -0.76% (27,038) and the S&P 500 hovers near flat at -0.08% (7,801) ahead of bank earnings and Wednesday's CPI print.
Breadth is tilted positive beneath the index-level noise — 10 of 11 S&P sectors are higher in pre-market with only Technology in the red, as the tape rewards value and defensives over megacap growth. SPY put/call volume at 1.24 reflects lingering hedging demand.

Market Commentary

Equities are trading with a distinctly rotational character on Tuesday as capital moves out of megacap technology and into cyclicals, financials and defensives. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the standout at +0.84% (52,287), while the Nasdaq Composite lags at -0.76% (27,038) and the S&P 500 sits essentially flat at -0.08% (7,801). The split is a direct function of a wobble in the AI chip complex — AMD -2.45%, AVGO -1.34% and NVDA -0.97% — against firmer action in value-oriented groups. Ten of eleven S&P sectors are higher in pre-market trade, underscoring that the index-level softness is concentrated rather than broad.

Financials (+0.75%) are in focus as bank earnings open the Q3 reporting season. JPM (+0.98%), V (+1.42%), MA (+0.83%) and MS (+1.66%) are all bid ahead of results, with BAC (-0.33%) the lone laggard. Elsewhere, Consumer Staples (+1.02%) lead the defensive rotation — WMT +1.22%, KO +1.23%, PG +0.89% — a posture consistent with investors de-risking into Wednesday's inflation data. Healthcare (+0.72%) is carried by a striking +4.37% move in UNH, which more than offsets a -2.21% slide in JNJ.

The macro calendar is the dominant overhang. Wednesday's CPI is the gating event, with consensus calling for headline inflation to reaccelerate to 3.6% YoY (from 3.4%) and the MoM rate to firm to 0.6%. That hot-inflation setup is reshaping Fed expectations: Polymarket assigns a 96% probability of zero rate cuts in 2026, and the October meeting market carries an 18% implied chance of a 25 bps hike against an 82% hold. Crude oil is down 1.25% to $92.57 while gold firms +0.27% to $4,202, and today's lighter data — NFIB Optimism at 97.9 (in line) and a cluster of Fed speakers including Waller, Barkin and Collins — are unlikely to shift the narrative before the inflation print.

Options positioning argues for a contained session absent a data surprise. SPY's implied move for the nearest expiry is just ±0.6%, dealers are confirmed long gamma (GEX +106M per 1% move, positive over six sessions), and the GEX structure frames a call wall at 795 and put wall at 770 around a 777 zero-gamma root. That long-gamma backdrop tends to dampen intraday swings, though the 25-delta skew of 4.7% and a put/call volume ratio of 1.24 show traders are paying up for downside protection into the CPI catalyst. Net, expect a quiet, two-sided tape today with the real risk event deferred to Wednesday morning.
