Positioning ahead of the 6:00 PM ET FOMC minutes — markets want clarity on the Fed's reaction function with Polymarket pricing 96% odds of no rate cuts in 2026 and 82% for no change at the October 28 meeting (16% pricing a 25 bps hike)
A broad defensive rotation: Staples (+0.55%), Healthcare (+0.41%), and Utilities (+0.10%) bid while cyclicals — Financials (-0.77%), Industrials (-0.57%, CAT -1.67%), and Tech (-0.60%) — soften
Gold's sharp 1.93% pullback to $4,106.4 dragging precious-metals miners (NEM -3.00%, FCX -2.04%), while crude firms to $89.81 (+0.41%) on a -2.09M API draw ahead of EIA data at 2:30 PM ET
Market Commentary

Stocks are set for a softer Wednesday open as index futures slip across the board — S&P 500 futures -0.40%, Nasdaq -0.70%, and the Dow -0.79% — with the cash S&P 500 sitting at 7,787.65. The tape carries a defensive tone, with Consumer Staples (+0.55%), Healthcare (+0.41%), and Utilities (+0.10%) the only sectors indicated higher, while cyclical and growth groups give ground. The overseas backdrop offered little support: the DAX fell 1.23%, the Euro Stoxx 50 dropped 1.61%, and the Nikkei shed 0.92%, setting a cautious global risk tone into the U.S. session.

The session's gravitational pull is this afternoon's FOMC minutes at 6:00 PM ET, which will be scrutinized for the Fed's assessment of sticky inflation against a still-firm labor backdrop. Prediction markets have moved decisively hawkish — Polymarket now assigns a 96% probability to zero rate cuts in 2026, and the October 28 decision market shows 82% for no change with a notable 16% pricing in a 25 bps hike. That repricing is visible in Financials (-0.77%), where MS (-1.42%), BAC (-1.28%), and JPM (-1.15%) lead to the downside ahead of today's 10-year note auction (prior 4.834%) and the recent run-up in the MBA 30-year mortgage rate to 7.49%.

Technology is a modest drag, down 0.60%, with the weakness concentrated in semis — AMD -1.95%, AVGO -1.28%, and NVDA -0.99% — while AAPL (+1.01%) bucks the trend. Materials (-0.62%) are being pressured by a sharp 1.93% reversal in gold to $4,106.4, which is punishing the miners; NEM is down 3.00% and FCX off 2.04%. Energy is the clear standout at +0.79%, supported by crude's climb to $89.81 (+0.41%) and a bullish API draw of -2.09M barrels; XOM (+0.94%), COP (+1.06%), and refiners VLO (+0.90%) and MPC (+0.84%) are leading. EIA inventory data at 2:30 PM ET is the next energy catalyst.

Options positioning argues for a contained session. SPY's implied move for the nearest expiry is just ±0.6%, and dealers are sitting in positive gamma (91% probability, GEX +162M per 1% move) — a regime that tends to dampen intraday swings, with the call wall at 800 as resistance and the put wall at 776 as support against a zero-gamma pivot near 778. That said, the 25-delta skew of 4.7% and a put/call volume ratio of 1.09 flag persistent downside hedging demand beneath the surface.

Beyond today's minutes, the near-term calendar is dense: Thursday brings initial jobless claims (F: 200K), and the real volatility setup arrives next week with September CPI on October 14 (headline seen at 3.7% YoY, up from 3.4%) and PPI plus Retail Sales on October 15. With markets effectively pricing the Fed on hold — and even flirting with a hike — those inflation prints loom as the next genuine test for a market that has pushed the S&P 500 near record territory.
