Daily Market Briefing

September 15, 2026

Equity futures point sharply higher Tuesday, with the S&P 500 indicated near 7,690 (+0.93%), the Nasdaq Composite around 26,473 (+1.10%) and the Dow near 52,803 (+0.73%), even as the 10-year Treasury yield presses above 5% one day ahead of the Fed decision.
Breadth signals are mixed pre-open — index futures are firmly green on megacap tech leadership, but sector internals are heavy with staples, communication and financials indicated lower; SPY put/call volume of 1.42 and a 6.2% 25-delta skew flag persistent downside hedging.

Market Commentary

Stocks are set for a firm open Tuesday despite an ominous macro backdrop, as index futures diverge from a bond market that continues to leak. The 10-year yield has climbed above 5% — a level headlines are treating as a psychological line in the sand — yet S&P 500 futures point to a 0.93% gain toward 7,690 and the Nasdaq indicates +1.10%. The move is being driven from the top of the semiconductor complex, with NVDA +0.84% and AMD +1.32% leading, while AVGO adds 0.54%. That leadership is doing heavy lifting: AAPL (-0.54%) and MSFT (-0.93%) are both indicated lower, and the broader Technology tape is essentially flat at -0.08% in extended hours before the regular session opens.

The tension is squarely rates-versus-risk. Fed officials meet tomorrow with a decision due at 6:00 PM ET, and prediction markets are heavily skewed toward action — Polymarket shows 88% odds of a 25 bp hike to 4.00%, and a striking 94% probability of zero rate cuts for all of 2026. The accompanying FOMC economic projections and updated rate path will matter more than the hike itself, particularly with the longer-run projection sitting at 3.1% and the current-year dot at 3.8%. With the 20-year bond auction (prior 5.204%) crossing the tape at 5:00 PM today, the term-premium narrative is very much live.

Underneath the futures pop, sector internals betray defensive positioning. Consumer Staples are the weakest group at -0.67% as bond proxies suffer under rising yields — KO -0.79%, COST -0.44% and WMT -0.39% — while Communication Services (-0.41%) is dragged by GOOGL -0.78% and NFLX -0.87%. Industrials (+0.41%) and Energy (+0.18%) offer the cyclical counterweight, with UNP standing out at +2.43% and crude holding near $101.41. Healthcare is buoyed almost entirely by LLY +1.70%. The rotation reads as investors leaning into rate-resilient cyclicals and select megacap secular winners while trimming rate-sensitive defensives.

Data flow is doing little to clarify the picture. The NY Empire State Manufacturing Index badly undershot at 7.60 versus 14.75 expected, down from a prior 20.60 — a notable deceleration in regional factory activity — even as the weekly ADP print firmed to 16.25K from 12.25K. That soft-growth-versus-sticky-rates mix keeps the stagflationary tail in view, and the options market is pricing accordingly: SPY put/call volume of 1.42 and a 6.2% 25-delta skew show puts remain firmly bid. That said, positive dealer gamma with a zero-gamma level at 760 and a call wall at 761 argues for suppressed realized volatility into the event, with an implied move of just ±0.9%.

The near-term calendar is dense. Beyond tomorrow's FOMC decision and Kevin Warsh-led Fed, traders face high-impact Retail Sales on Wednesday (consensus +0.9% MoM, rebounding from -0.6%) and Thursday's housing starts, building permits and jobless claims (est. 205K). With yields at 5% and the Fed poised to tighten further, any hawkish surprise in the dot plot could quickly test the futures' current optimism — and the put wall at 750 marks the level bulls will want to defend if sentiment sours.
