Equities are on the defensive Wednesday, though the damage is unevenly distributed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is the clear underperformer at 52,786, down 1.18%, dragged by Financials and Healthcare, while the tech-heavy NASDAQ limits its loss to just 0.32% at 26,421 thanks to strength in the semiconductor complex. The S&P 500 sits at 7,673, off 0.58%, holding above the closely watched GEX call/put wall clustered at 770 on SPY, where positive dealer gamma should continue to suppress realized volatility. SPY ATM implied vol remains subdued at 11.8% (IV rank 37), with the implied move for the nearest expiry a modest ±0.7%.
The dominant macro overhang is a hawkish repricing into next week's FOMC decision. Real-money prediction markets now assign a 54% probability to a 25 bps rate HIKE to 4.00% on September 16 — a striking stance that helps explain the underperformance of rate-sensitive Financials (-1.14%), where JPM (-1.43%), V (-1.71%) and MA (-1.44%) are all lower. Reinforcing the inflation angle, crude oil is up 1.69% to roughly $93 and pressing toward the psychologically important $100 level, a move that is buoying Energy (+0.88%) via refiners VLO (+3.27%) and MPC (+2.28%) even as it complicates the disinflation story just ahead of Thursday's PPI (consensus +0.4% headline, +5.3% YoY) and Friday's CPI (consensus +3.4% YoY).
Sector rotation carries a distinctly defensive flavor. Utilities lead at +0.96% with NEE, SO and DUK all firmer, and even Real Estate (+0.31%) is holding green. On the other side, Healthcare is the worst performer at -2.56%, with broad selling across ABBV (-2.99%), JNJ (-2.22%) and LLY (-2.21%) — notably, UNH (+0.93%) is a rare bright spot. Consumer Discretionary (-1.29%) is weighed by HD (-2.29%) and TJX (-2.39%), though a 3.98% surge in TSLA cushions the headline number.
Underneath the surface, the semiconductor tape tells a two-track story. AMD is ripping +5.90% and AVGO is up 2.98%, keeping the Technology sector positive at +0.86% and supporting the NASDAQ, even as index heavyweights NVDA (-2.01%), AAPL (-1.17%) and MSFT (-1.15%) trade heavy. Apple's iPhone event is a focal point today, and SPY 25-delta skew of 1.7% signals traders are paying up modestly for downside protection despite the neutral 0.85 put/call volume ratio.
With the September FOMC, PPI, CPI and preliminary Michigan sentiment all landing in the next 48 hours, positioning is understandably cautious. Today's slate is lighter — the weekly ADP Employment Change (prior 11.75K) at 12:15 PM ET and the 10-Year Note auction at 5:00 PM ET (prior 4.683%) offer the main data points, with the latter a useful read on demand for duration given the hawkish Fed repricing. Expect price action to remain rangebound near the 770 SPY gamma wall until the inflation prints force a directional resolution.
