Market Commentary

Stocks are set for a listless open Tuesday as investors square positioning ahead of a consequential run of inflation data and next week's Federal Reserve decision. The S&P 500 futures point to a fractional 0.11% dip near 7,710, while the Dow's 0.61% slide to 53,089 reflects idiosyncratic pressure on Boeing (-0.48%) and industrial-adjacent names following news that the inquiry into a fatal Miami plane crash has escalated. The NASDAQ bucks the softer tone, up 0.24%, propped up by a firm semiconductor complex where AMD (+1.95%), AVGO (+1.31%) and NVDA (+0.86%) are shrugging off weakness in the megacap-hardware trio of AAPL (-0.83%) and MSFT (-0.88%).

Energy is the standout, ahead 1.08% as WTI crude jumps 1.66% to $93/bbl on continued U.S.-Iran hostilities and reports of Canadian retaliatory tariffs. Refiners VLO (+1.34%) and MPC (+1.31%) lead, with the integrateds XOM (+0.77%) and CVX (+0.58%) participating. Materials also firm, aided by a notable 3.61% pop in FCX. The offset comes from defensives and financials: healthcare is the day's laggard at -1.58%, with JNJ (-1.68%) and LLY (-0.99%) heavy, while financials shed 0.79% as MS (-1.11%), MA (-0.85%) and V (-0.83%) soften. The rotation reflects a market weighing higher energy input costs against a still-uncertain rate path.

Overseas, the tone was cautious. Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 1.70% and Hang Seng eased 0.38%, while European bourses were little changed — the FTSE 100 +0.06%, DAX flat, and Euro Stoxx 50 +0.14%. Gold's 0.40% advance to $4,447 underscores the risk-off, geopolitically-charged undercurrent, corroborated by prediction markets pricing an 83% chance Maduro remains Venezuela's leader and elevated odds around the Iranian blockade narrative.

The macro calendar is the dominant variable this week. Traders face PPI on Thursday (headline seen +0.4% MoM, core +0.3%) and the marquee CPI report Friday, where the headline is expected to reaccelerate to +0.4% MoM and hold at 3.4% YoY. These prints land directly ahead of the September 16 FOMC meeting, where the consensus and Polymarket (52% odds) lean toward a 25 bps hike to 4.00%. Notably, prediction markets assign a 93% probability of no rate cuts at all in 2026, a hawkish backdrop that argues against complacency even with the resilient tech tape. Today's second-tier data — a soft NFIB Optimism reading of 98.7 (below the 99.3 forecast) and cooling used-car prices — did little to move the needle.

Options positioning warrants attention: SPY sits in negative gamma with the call wall at 771 and put wall at 769, meaning dealer hedging is likely to amplify intraday swings against a compressed implied move of roughly ±0.7%. A slight negative 25-delta skew signals lingering upside demand, but with binary catalysts stacked into Thursday and Friday, the setup favors patience over conviction. Watch crude's trajectory and any headline escalation out of the Middle East as the near-term swing factor for cyclical leadership.
