Daily Market Briefing

September 1, 2026

Equities are under pressure Tuesday morning, with S&P 500 futures pointing to a -0.67% open near 7,635, Nasdaq futures off -1.29%, and Dow futures down -0.61% as surging Treasury yields and a 2.55% jump in crude to $87.95/bbl weigh on risk appetite.
Breadth is decidedly negative, with the tape split along a classic risk-off line: growth and megacap tech lead losers while defensives and energy stay green. The SPY put/call volume ratio at 1.10 and a 4.7% 25-delta skew underscore a defensive posture.

Moving the Market
Rising global bond yields are the dominant theme, compressing valuations across rate-sensitive megacap tech — NVDA -1.74%, AMD -2.36%, META -2.08% — and driving the Nasdaq's 1.29% pre-market decline
Crude oil's +2.55% spike to $87.95 is lifting Energy (+1.57%) but reinforcing inflation concerns that are keeping the Fed on a hawkish footing ahead of the Sept. 16 decision
A defensive rotation into Healthcare (+0.71%), Staples (+0.63%) and Utilities (+0.32%) signals investors de-risking ahead of a heavy data week, with today's ISM Manufacturing and JOLTS at 2:00 PM the first hurdles
Market Commentary

Stocks are set to open lower Tuesday as a fresh backup in global bond yields and a sharp rally in crude combine to pressure risk assets. S&P 500 futures sit near 7,647 (-0.67%), Nasdaq futures are the notable laggard at -1.29%, and Dow futures are off -0.61%. The move is a textbook rate-driven de-rating: with yields rising, the market is punishing the longest-duration equities hardest, and megacap tech is bearing the brunt. NVDA -1.74%, AMD -2.36%, MSFT -1.37% and AVGO -1.64% are all lower pre-bell, while Communication Services names META (-2.08%) and GOOGL (-1.14%) add to the drag.

The sector map tells the rotation story clearly. Energy is the standout gainer at +1.57%, powered by WTI's +2.55% advance to $87.95/bbl, with COP +1.97%, MPC +1.82%, and integrateds XOM (+1.62%) and CVX (+1.61%) all bid. Defensives are catching flows as well — Healthcare +0.71% (LLY +1.58%, JNJ +1.32%), Consumer Staples +0.63% (KO +0.88%, WMT +0.79%), and Utilities +0.32%. On the downside, Materials -0.63% is being dragged by a rout in the miners, with NEM -3.63% and FCX -3.30% notably weak despite the broader commodity firmness.

Macro is front and center this week. Today brings a dense 2:00 PM ET slate: ISM Manufacturing PMI (consensus 55.2 vs. 55.6 prior), JOLTS job openings (7.3M expected), and the ISM Prices sub-index (72.0 expected, up from 71.1) — the latter worth watching given the inflation sensitivity implied by rising oil. Monday's Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index already surprised sharply to the upside at 11.6 versus a 0.7 forecast, adding to the narrative of resilient activity that keeps the Fed cautious. The week culminates Friday with nonfarm payrolls (consensus +58K following a -23K prior print), and ADP lands Wednesday.

The policy backdrop remains hawkish. Prediction markets now assign a 56% probability to a 25 bps hike at the September 16 meeting versus 42% for no change, and an overwhelming 89% chance of no rate cuts at all in 2026 — a striking reversal of the easing expectations that dominated earlier. That repricing is the engine behind the yield move and the pressure on growth multiples. Fed Barr is scheduled to speak at 1:05 PM ET, though investors will be more focused on the hard data and the run-up to the FOMC decision and updated projections in two weeks.

Positioning signals warrant attention. SPY options show a depressed IV regime with options screening cheap, yet the 25-delta skew of 4.7% and a 1.10 put/call volume ratio flag genuine downside hedging. Dealers remain in positive gamma with a call wall at 770 and put-wall support at 756, which should temper intraday volatility barring a data shock. With the implied move for the nearest expiry at just ±0.6%, the market is not braced for fireworks today — but a hot ISM Prices reading or a soft JOLTS print could quickly test those assumptions.
