Daily Market Briefing

August 26, 2026

Equities are little changed to modestly lower ahead of Nvidia earnings, with the S&P 500 at 7668.55 (-0.11%) and the Nasdaq at 26067.78 (-0.32%), while the Dow holds a fractional gain at 53601.37 (+0.04%) following an in-line core PCE print.
Breadth is mixed with a defensive tilt in pre-market; Financials, Utilities, Real Estate and Industrials edge higher while Technology (-0.80%) and Energy (-1.14%) lag, reflecting caution rather than conviction ahead of the NVDA report and Jackson Hole.

Market Commentary

Stocks are marking time on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 fractionally lower at 7668.55 and the Nasdaq off 0.32% to 26067.78 as traders de-risk ahead of Nvidia's (NVDA) after-the-close report. The Dow is the relative outperformer at +0.04%, buoyed by a rotation into Financials (+0.26%), Utilities (+0.17%) and Industrials (+0.12%). Overseas, sentiment was firmer — the DAX rose 0.45%, the Nikkei added 0.62% and the Hang Seng gained 0.56% — but that tailwind is being neutralized stateside by mega-cap tech caution. META (+1.84%) is a notable bright spot within Communication Services, while MSFT (-0.68%) and AMD (-1.17%) reflect the pre-earnings drag on the AI trade.

The morning's marquee data point, core PCE, landed in line at 0.2% MoM and 3.3% YoY, but the details skewed hawkish: headline PCE beat at 0.2% MoM and 3.7% YoY, the GDP price index printed a hot 6.4%, and PCE prices QoQ came in at 5.3% versus 5.1% expected. Growth held up — GDP was affirmed at 1.5% with real consumer spending revised up to 3.4% and durable goods orders jumping 1.1% — but real personal spending stalled at 0.0%. The net message is a sticky-inflation, resilient-demand mix that reinforces a Fed on hold. Prediction markets now price 66% odds of no change at the September 16 meeting, a striking 34% probability of a hike, and 87% odds of zero cuts for all of 2026.

Energy is the clear laggard, down 1.14% as crude sinks 2.57% to $80.24 following a bearish 4.2M-barrel API inventory build; XOM (-1.25%), COP (-1.17%) and the refiners (VLO -1.30%, MPC -1.41%) are all under pressure ahead of the EIA report at 2:30 PM ET. Gold, by contrast, is catching a bid at $4679.5 (+0.89%), consistent with its positive intraday correlation to the Nasdaq (+0.48) and the market's hunt for an inflation hedge. Treasuries are the swing factor — NQ's rolling correlations show a tight +0.57 link to the 10Y note (ZN) and +0.95 to the S&P (ES), underscoring how rate-sensitive this tape remains.

Options positioning suggests a coiled setup: SPY sits in a positive-gamma regime with dealer hedging suppressing realized vol, IV rank pinned at 0, and an implied move of just ±0.8% for the nearest expiry. The call wall at 766 and put wall at 760 (against a zero-gamma level near 765) frame the near-term battleground, but Nvidia's guidance has the potential to force a vol expansion that overwhelms that structure. With the Jackson Hole Symposium beginning Thursday and Fed Chair Warsh slated to speak Friday, the confluence of NVDA, a hot inflation backdrop, and central-bank commentary sets up an unusually binary next 48 hours. Fed officials, including Barkin (speaking again at 3:45 PM ET today), have offered little reason to expect a dovish pivot.

Bottom line: this is a wait-and-see session with a defensive undertone. Money is quietly rotating toward Financials and rate-beneficiary value while trimming crowded AI exposure. The 7,700 level on the S&P remains the near-term hurdle, and the tone into Thursday's open will hinge almost entirely on whether Nvidia can validate the semiconductor complex's rich valuations.
