Daily Market Briefing

August 24, 2026

Equities open the week on the defensive, with the S&P 500 futures off 0.19% near 7,677, Nasdaq futures down 0.60% near 29,211, and Dow futures easing 0.09% as investors brace for a data-heavy stretch culminating in Wednesday's core PCE and Nvidia's earnings.
Breadth skews mildly negative in pre-market, with defensives (Staples, Utilities, Materials, Real Estate) outperforming cyclicals and tech; a SPY put/call volume ratio of 1.40 and 25-delta skew of 1.4% signal buyers reaching for downside protection.

Anticipation ahead of a loaded macro calendar — Wednesday's core PCE (F: 0.2% MoM, 3.3% YoY) and Q2 GDP 2nd estimate (F: 1.5%) headline a week that culminates in the Jackson Hole Symposium and a Fed Chair Warsh speech Friday
Nvidia (NVDA -0.05%) earnings loom as the key single-stock catalyst, keeping semis and the broader Nasdaq (-0.60% futures) capped; AMD -1.61% and AVGO -0.98% lead chip weakness
Flight to safety evident as gold jumps +2.0% to $4,716.5 and crude sinks -1.93% to $85.38, with US-Canada trade talks reportedly breaking down and Hang Seng -1.89% weighing on global sentiment
Market Commentary

Wall Street enters Monday's session in a cautious crouch, with S&P 500 futures down 0.19% near 7,677 and Nasdaq 100 futures leading the retreat at -0.60%. The tone is decidedly risk-averse: defensive sectors dominate the pre-market tape, with Utilities (+0.69%), Materials (+0.61%), Consumer Staples (+0.55%) and Real Estate (+0.38%) all firmly bid, while Technology (-0.47%) and Energy (-0.52%) lag. Overseas cues offered little support, as Hong Kong's Hang Seng slumped 1.89% and Japan's Nikkei fell 0.74%, though European bourses held near flat with the FTSE 100 unchanged.

The clear source of hesitation is the calendar. This week is stacked with high-impact prints — Wednesday delivers the core PCE deflator (consensus 0.2% MoM, 3.3% YoY), the second estimate of Q2 GDP (F: 1.5% versus 2.1% prior), and durable goods orders — while the Jackson Hole Symposium runs Thursday through Saturday and a Fed Chair Warsh speech is slated for Friday. With Polymarket assigning an 86% probability to zero Fed rate cuts in 2026 and a notable 32% chance of a 25 bp hike at September's meeting, the inflation data carry outsized weight for positioning into the September 16 FOMC.

Nvidia (NVDA), fractionally lower pre-bell at -0.05%, is the marquee single-name catalyst and its report will set the tone for the AI complex. Ahead of it, semis are soft — AMD -1.61% and AVGO -0.98% — helping explain the Nasdaq's relative underperformance. The safe-haven bid is unmistakable elsewhere: gold vaulted 2.0% to $4,716.5, an all-time-high vicinity move, while crude oil slid 1.93% to $85.38 on demand concerns and a reported breakdown in US-Canada trade talks that has nudged futures lower.

Options positioning corroborates the wary mood. SPY's put/call volume ratio sits at a bearish 1.40 with the OI ratio at 1.50, and 25-delta skew of 1.4% shows traders paying up for downside insurance. Yet ATM implied vol screens extremely depressed with an IV rank of 0 and an implied move of just ±0.6% for the nearest expiry — a positive-gamma, dealer-suppressed regime with a zero-gamma level at 765. That setup keeps a lid on realized volatility for now, but leaves the tape vulnerable to an outsized reaction should Wednesday's PCE or Nvidia's guidance surprise.

Near term, watch the SPY call wall at 766 as overhead resistance and the put wall at 763 as support. Today's macro slate is light — the Chicago Fed National Activity Index (F: 0.1) and 3- and 6-month bill auctions — with a Treasury Secretary Bessent speech at 6:00 PM ET. Expect subdued, range-bound trade as investors reserve conviction for the inflation and earnings gauntlet ahead.
