Market Commentary

Stocks are set to close the week on the front foot Friday, with S&P 500 futures up 0.43%, Nasdaq futures leading at +0.64% and Dow futures +0.57%. The tone is risk-on but disciplined, with cyclicals — Materials (+1.18%), Financials (+0.65%), Industrials (+0.59%) and Technology (+0.63%) — pacing the tape while defensives lag. The standout macro signal is a violent move in gold, up 3.04% to $4,653.6, that is reverberating through the metals complex: FCX is indicated +4.03% and NEM +2.63%, single-handedly powering the materials sector's outperformance.

Technology remains the market's center of gravity heading into next week's marquee event — Nvidia (NVDA +0.58%) reports on Aug. 26. Semis are firm across the board, with AVGO +1.17% and AMD +0.97%, and the megacap complex broadly steady (GOOGL +0.65%, META +0.48%, AMZN +0.59%, TSLA +1.20%). The AlphaCheck narrative of soft retail post-WMT (-0.22%) is being offset by an upbeat forecast from Ross Stores, which is lifting the discounter cohort (TJX +0.70%). Energy is the notable soft spot, with crude off 1.16% to $86.81 dragging XOM (-0.16%) and COP (-0.30%).

The rates backdrop is the key crosscurrent. Yesterday's data ran hot — initial claims fell to 206K (below the 210K consensus), the Philly Fed Business Conditions index exploded to 73.6 from 34.4, and the CB Leading Index beat at +0.2%. That firmer growth signal, paired with a still-sticky inflation picture, has prediction markets leaning decidedly hawkish: Polymarket assigns 87% odds to zero Fed rate cuts in 2026, and — notably — a 28% probability of a September rate hike versus just 1% for a cut. This is the tension underneath a market that is otherwise pricing risk assets higher.

The calendar sets up a heavy week. Today brings the S&P Global flash PMIs at 1:45 PM ET, with the composite expected to ease to 53.2 from 54.5. But the real gravity is next week: the Jackson Hole Symposium opens Aug. 27, and the Aug. 26 Core PCE (F: +0.2% MoM, 3.3% YoY) plus the second-estimate GDP print land the same session, with a September FOMC decision looming behind them. With gold breaking out and the growth data surprising to the upside, investors will parse Fed messaging out of Jackson Hole closely for confirmation of the higher-for-longer regime the odds are now discounting.

On positioning, SPY options screen unusually cheap — ATM IV sits near the floor with an IV Rank of 0/100 and an implied move of just ±0.8% for the nearest expiry, a depressed-vol regime that leaves the tape exposed to a vol expansion around next week's catalysts. Dealer positioning is in positive gamma, suppressing intraday swings, with a GEX call wall at 763 as resistance and a put wall at 759 as support. The 25-delta skew of 1.4% and a put/call volume ratio of 1.06 point to some hedging demand building beneath the surface even as futures grind higher.
