Daily Market Briefing

August 12, 2026

Equities are broadly higher Wednesday following an in-line July CPI report, with the S&P 500 up 0.38% to 7,757, the NASDAQ leading gains at +0.86% to 26,672, and the Dow adding 0.24% to 53,922.
Breadth is modestly positive but uneven — tech and materials lead the advance while defensives (staples, healthcare) and communication services lag, suggesting risk appetite is concentrated rather than broad-based.

July CPI landed in-line across the board — headline CPI at 333.92 vs 333.99 consensus, YoY inflation cooling to 3.4% from 3.5%, and Core YoY easing to 2.5% — removing a near-term tail risk and lifting futures

Gold's 2.22% spike to $4,480 signals persistent macro hedging demand even as equities rally; NQ shows a +0.46 rolling correlation to gold and +0.44 to the 10Y note
Market Commentary

Equities are trading higher Wednesday after a benign July CPI print cleared a key hurdle for risk assets. Headline CPI at 333.92 came in fractionally below the 333.99 consensus, with the year-over-year rate slipping to 3.4% from 3.5% and Core YoY easing to 2.5% from 2.6%. Every major inflation subcomponent printed in-line, and the market's reaction has been an orderly relief rally rather than a euphoric one — the S&P 500 is up 0.38% to 7,757, the NASDAQ leads at +0.86% to 26,672, and the Dow trails at +0.24%. The move is being led by megacap technology, where the AI-infrastructure complex is doing the heavy lifting: AVGO +2.02%, AMD +1.75% and NVDA +1.29% are all bid following strong results from several Nvidia partners, notably CoreWeave.

Sector positioning tells a clear risk-on story. Technology (+0.76%) and Materials (+0.66%) sit atop the leaderboard, with the latter riding gold's outsized 2.22% advance to $4,480 — a move that has NEM (+2.38%) and FCX (+1.50%) leading the group. Consumer Discretionary (+0.59%) is supported by a standout 3.63% pop in TJX and steady gains in AMZN and TSLA. On the other side, the classic defensive complex is under pressure as capital rotates toward growth: Healthcare (-0.54%), Consumer Staples (-0.53%) and Utilities (-0.07%) are all soft. Communication Services (-0.39%) is the notable laggard, dragged lower by a 3.10% decline in GOOG that META's +1.17% cannot fully offset.

The intraday cross-asset picture is worth flagging. NQ remains tightly coupled to the broad tape (+0.91 correlation to ES) but is also carrying elevated positive correlations to both the 10-year note (+0.44) and gold (+0.46), while decoupling from the dollar (-0.20) and crude (-0.17). That gold strength alongside an equity rally is a subtle tell — investors are pressing the risk trade while simultaneously maintaining macro hedges, consistent with lingering geopolitical and policy uncertainty. Notably, prediction markets continue to price a firmly hawkish Fed: 86% odds of no rate cuts in 2026, and for the September meeting the market actually leans toward a 34% chance of a 25 bp hike versus 64% for no change and just 1% for a cut.

The options backdrop underscores how quiet the surface has become. SPY ATM implied volatility sits at a depressed 0.1% with an IV Rank of 0 — options are cheap and vulnerable to a vol expansion. The 25-delta skew of -1.2% shows calls bid up for upside demand, though the put/call volume ratio at 1.09 reflects some hedging underneath. With dealers in negative gamma and a zero-gamma level at 771, moves could be amplified in either direction; the call wall at 773 marks near-term resistance and the put wall at 770 offers support, framing a tight ±0.8% implied move.

Attention now shifts to Thursday's data slate, which carries genuine catalyst risk: PPI (consensus +0.2% MoM headline, +0.3% core) and initial jobless claims (F: 202K) both print, followed by Friday's retail sales. With the disinflation narrative on firmer footing after today's CPI, the market's tolerance for a hot PPI or a soft consumer read will be tested. Beyond that, the August 19 FOMC minutes and the August 27-29 Jackson Hole Symposium loom as the marquee policy events, and given prediction-market pricing tilting toward a possible hike, Fed communication will be scrutinized closely for any shift in tone.
