August 1, 2026

Equities closed out the week on a firm note Friday, with the S&P 500 up 0.70% to 7489.72, the NASDAQ leading at +1.00% to 25373.85, and the Dow adding 0.53% to 52485.03, propelled by a blowout earnings response in mega-cap tech and consumer discretionary.
Breadth was mixed beneath the surface despite the index gains — leadership was concentrated in Communication Services and Consumer Discretionary while Materials (-1.45%), Real Estate (-0.80%), and Healthcare (-0.54%) lagged, underscoring a narrow, earnings-driven tape rather than broad participation.

Market Commentary

Stocks finished the week on solid footing Friday as an earnings-driven melt-up in mega-cap technology and consumer names lifted the major averages. The NASDAQ paced the advance with a 1.00% gain to 25373.85, the S&P 500 added 0.70% to 7489.72, and the Dow tacked on 0.53% to 52485.03. Futures point to continued strength into Monday, with S&P 500 futures indicated +0.63% at 7519.25. The star of the session was Amazon (AMZN +15.32%), which detonated higher on a breakneck acceleration in its cloud business, dragging the entire Consumer Discretionary sector up 0.87% and reinforcing the 'beyond the Mag 7' earnings-expansion narrative gaining traction across the Street.

Communication Services was the standout group at +1.96%, driven by a powerful bid in Alphabet (GOOGL +6.73%, GOOG +6.88%) and Meta (META +3.28%). That leadership was notable given it came in the face of a jarring 7.35% decline in Apple (AAPL), which capped Technology's advance at a modest +0.28% despite gains in NVDA (+2.93%) and MSFT (+3.02%). The concentration of gains in a handful of platform names — with breadth thin elsewhere — is a hallmark of the current regime, and rotation dynamics bear watching. Energy (+1.18%) also outperformed as crude oil climbed 1.29% to $84.67, lifting CVX (+2.35%) and COP (+1.22%).

The laggards told a defensive-cyclical mixed story. Materials was the worst-performing sector at -1.45%, gutted by a 5.95% plunge in Linde (LIN) and weakness in Newmont (NEM -2.14%) as gold retreated 1.24% to $4049.10. Real Estate (-0.80%), Healthcare (-0.54%), Consumer Staples (-0.49%), and Utilities (-0.43%) all finished in the red, a signal that money was chasing growth beta rather than seeking cover. The macro tape was supportive: Chicago PMI beat at 57.6 (vs. 56 expected) and final Michigan Consumer Sentiment was revised up sharply to 55.2 from a 49.5 prior, while the Employment Cost Index came in at 0.9% QoQ — firm enough to keep the Fed patient.

On that front, prediction markets are pricing an 88% probability of no Fed rate cuts in 2026, an important anchor for positioning. With Fed policy seen on hold, the market's attention shifts squarely to the data. The week ahead is loaded: ISM Manufacturing lands Monday, JOLTS Tuesday, ADP and ISM Services Wednesday, and the marquee July nonfarm payrolls report next Friday (consensus +91K, unemployment 4.3%). A cooling labor picture against still-sticky wage data would test the soft-landing thesis that underpinned this week's advance.

From a positioning standpoint, the options complex flags complacency. SPY ATM implied vol sits at just 7.8% with an IV Rank of 9 and IV Percentile of 2 — a depressed regime where options are cheap and vol expansion is a live risk. Dealers are in positive gamma with a zero-gamma level near 728, a call wall at 750 and put wall at 745, which mechanically suppresses realized volatility near-term. But the 25-delta skew of 1.8% and a put/call volume ratio of 1.03 show traders quietly paying up for downside protection. With the implied move for the nearest expiry at just ±0.6%, any upside surprise — or disappointment — from next week's ISM and payrolls prints could catch a lightly-hedged tape offside.
