Daily Market Briefing

July 30, 2026

Equity futures are firmly higher ahead of Thursday's open, with S&P 500 futures +0.72% (fair value near 7404), Nasdaq futures leading +1.53%, and Dow futures +0.45%, as blowout Microsoft earnings offset a sharp Meta selloff.
Breadth is uneven beneath the megacap-driven surface — Technology, Consumer Discretionary and Industrials point higher pre-market while Communication Services, Healthcare and Consumer Staples lag, signaling a narrow, AI-led advance rather than a broad risk-on melt-up.

Meta Platforms (META -9.77%) plunges on its results/spending guidance, capping the upside in Communication Services and keeping breadth narrow.
A heavy 12:30 PM ET macro slate looms — Q2 GDP Advance (F: 2.1%), Core PCE MoM (F: 0.2%), and Initial Jobless Claims (F: 200K vs 187K prior) — one day after the Fed held at 3.75%.
Market Commentary

Stocks are set to rebound Thursday, with the tech tape doing the heavy lifting. S&P 500 futures sit +0.72% (fair value near 7404), Dow futures +0.45%, and Nasdaq futures a standout +1.53% as Microsoft's (MSFT +9.64%) earnings reaffirmed that its aggressive AI capex is translating into cloud and margin upside. The read-through swept the semiconductor complex — AMD +4.61%, AVGO +2.10%, NVDA +1.94% — and pushed the Technology sector +1.95% in extended trade. The catch is the concentration: this is a megacap-led advance, and the internals tell a more cautious story.

That caution is embodied by Meta (META -9.77%), which is cratering post-earnings and dragging Communication Services to -1.77%, the worst-performing group pre-market. The defensive rotation is equally telling — Consumer Staples -1.42% (PM -2.23%, KO -1.23%, WMT -1.03%) and Healthcare -1.07% (JNJ, LLY, MRK all down more than 1.6%) are being sold as capital chases growth. Consumer Discretionary +1.29% is buoyed by Amazon (AMZN +3.22%) into its own report and a +1.81% bounce in Tesla, which had just closed below $300 for the first time in a year after a six-day losing streak.

The macro calendar is the real gating factor. At 12:30 PM ET, investors get a dense release: Q2 GDP Advance (F: 2.1%), the Fed's preferred Core PCE (F: 0.2% MoM, 3.3% YoY vs 3.4% prior), and Initial Jobless Claims (F: 200K vs 187K prior). This lands one day after the Fed left the funds rate unchanged at 3.75%, an in-line hold. Prediction markets are pricing essentially no pivot — Polymarket puts the odds of zero rate cuts in 2026 at 90% — so today's inflation and growth prints will shape whether that hawkish base case holds. A soft Core PCE would give the AI rally room to broaden; a hot number risks exposing the market's narrow leadership.

Cross-asset signals reinforce the risk-on-but-hedged posture. Gold is ripping +2.51% to $4,135.8, an unusual companion to an equity-futures rally and a sign of persistent inflation and geopolitical hedging demand. Crude is easing -0.92% to $83.68 even after a bullish -7.17M EIA crude draw, while the NQ's rolling correlations show the expected -0.91 inverse relationship with the VIX and a +0.91 tether to the ES. Options positioning is notably muted — SPY ATM IV is depressed with a 0/100 IV Rank and an implied move of just ±1.4% — yet a Put/Call volume ratio of 1.71 and 25-delta skew bid for downside puts flag lingering defensive hedging beneath the calm.

Bottom line: futures point to a constructive open led by Microsoft and the AI trade, but with Meta's collapse, defensive-sector selling, and a high-stakes GDP/PCE double-header at 12:30 PM ET, the durability of the move hinges on the data. Positive dealer gamma (call wall at 730, put wall at 727) should suppress intraday volatility into the print, but any inflation surprise could quickly test that positioning.
