Daily Market Briefing

July 25, 2026

Stocks closed the week mixed as a violent rotation out of megacap tech left the NASDAQ down 1.18% to 24,840 while the Dow gained 0.44% to 51,941 and the S&P 500 clung to breakeven at 7,410.79 (+0.03%).
Breadth belied the flat headline tape — cyclical and defensive leadership (Industrials +2.90%, Healthcare +2.40%) offset a broad tech/communication/discretionary drubbing, with SPY put/call volume at 1.17 signaling a defensive tilt into the weekend.

Market Commentary

The week ended with a stark bifurcation beneath a placid S&P 500 close. The benchmark finished a hair higher at 7,410.79 (+0.03%) and the Dow tacked on 0.44% to 51,941, but the NASDAQ Composite dropped 1.18% to 24,840 as a chipmaker rout and mounting anxiety over AI capital-spending ate into the mega-cap complex. Technology fell 2.15%, with MSFT -2.24%, AMD -2.29% and NVDA -1.56% all under pressure, while Communication Services (-4.11%) was gutted by GOOGL -7.13% and a startling TMUS -10.75% decline.

The damage was most acute in Consumer Discretionary (-3.09%), where TSLA cratered 14.52% and AMZN shed 4.57%. That churn masked a decisive rotation into value and defensives: Industrials surged 2.90% on RTX +7.33% and UNP +4.02%, and Healthcare climbed 2.40% behind MRK +2.36% and LLY +1.97%. The dispersion — cyclicals and defensives up, secular-growth down — reflects investors trimming crowded AI winners and repositioning ahead of a dense macro week. Notably, the ES/NQ correlation held firm at +0.91, yet the Dow's outperformance underscores where capital is hiding.

Crude oil was the day's other headline, tumbling 3.12% to $89.31. While Barron's flagged 'elevated oil prices' as a weekly drag, Friday's reversal offers modest inflation relief just as a wall of price data approaches. Gold firmed 0.52% to $4,067.60 on the defensive tone. Overseas, Europe was heavy — the DAX -1.56% and Euro Stoxx 50 -1.69% — while Asia diverged, with the Hang Seng +1.28% and Nikkei +0.46%.

Options positioning leans cautious into the open calendar: SPY ATM IV sits at a benign 9.8% (IV rank 28), but the put/call volume ratio of 1.17 and a 2.7% 25-delta skew signal genuine downside hedging. Positive dealer gamma should suppress realized vol near-term, with the implied move pinned at ±0.7%. The setup is a market willing to churn sector-to-sector rather than break trend.

The week ahead is a gauntlet. Durable Goods (Mon, F: +1.6%) and Consumer Confidence (Tue, F: 92.1) precede Wednesday's FOMC decision, where Polymarket pins a hold at 73% and prices essentially zero cuts for 2026 (85% for none). The marquee event is Thursday's advance Q2 GDP (F: +2.3%) paired with Core PCE (F: +0.1% MoM, +3.2% YoY) — a soft print would validate the goldilocks rotation, while sticky inflation could pressure the rate-sensitive growth names already on the back foot. With payrolls (Aug 7) and CPI (Aug 12) still ahead, expect continued rotation rather than resolution.
