Market Commentary

Monday's session reflects a two-speed market: mega-cap technology and energy are carrying the tape while the broader cyclical complex fades. The Nasdaq is up 0.19% to 25,570 on the back of a firm semiconductor bid — AMD +3.19%, AVGO +2.16% and MSFT +1.90% — but the S&P 500 is effectively flat at 7,454 and the Dow is off 0.53% at 51,873 as Industrials (-1.25%) and Consumer Discretionary (-1.24%) drag. The internal split is stark, with nine of eleven S&P sectors in the red and defensives such as Healthcare (-0.85%), Staples (-0.79%) and Utilities (-0.78%) offering no shelter. Overseas, the Nikkei's -4.03% plunge stands out as a caution flag, even as the Hang Seng rallied 2.36%.

Energy is the standout gainer, up 1.04%, as WTI crude adds 1.35% to $82.88 on headlines that an Iran ally is threatening Saudi supply. XOM (+0.89%), CVX (+1.22%) and COP (+1.36%) lead the group higher. The geopolitical premium is a double-edged sword for equities — NQ's rolling -0.52 inverse correlation to crude underscores how a sustained oil rally could crimp risk appetite. Prediction markets keep Iran-related tail risks live: Polymarket assigns a 26% probability to a U.S. invasion of Iran before 2027 and 38% to Israel closing its airspace by August 31.

Macro data offered little support, with the Conference Board Leading Index printing -0.2% versus the -0.1% consensus — a modest miss that reinforces a decelerating-growth narrative also visible in the July 30 GDP advance forecast of just 1.1% versus 2.1% prior. Bill auctions came in slightly firmer (3-month at 3.73%, 6-month at 3.835%), consistent with a market that expects the Fed to stand pat. Polymarket pegs a 92% chance of no change at the July 29 FOMC and an 84% probability of zero rate cuts across all of 2026, keeping the higher-for-longer thesis firmly intact.

The options backdrop signals modest hedging demand rather than outright fear. SPY ATM implied vol sits at 11.4% with an IV rank of 41 — a normal regime — but the put/call volume ratio of 1.18 and puts bid up in the 25-delta skew point to downside protection buying. Critically, GEX is in negative-gamma territory below the 620 zero-gamma level, meaning dealer hedging will amplify directional moves; expect choppier, trend-extending action with an implied move of roughly ±0.7% into the nearest expiry.

The near-term catalyst calendar is dense. This week is heavy with big-tech earnings that will test whether the AI-driven leadership can continue justifying stretched multiples — a concern echoed by Warren Buffett's remarks on the difficulty of finding value. Beyond earnings, traders will watch weekly ADP employment (Tuesday), initial jobless claims and flash PMIs later in the week, before the marquee events of the July 29 FOMC decision and the July 30 GDP/PCE double-header. Until then, expect the market to trade on the tension between resilient mega-cap tech, a rising oil premium, and softening cyclical breadth.
