Daily Market Briefing

July 18, 2026

Equities closed the week on the defensive, with the S&P 500 sliding 1.01% to 7457.69, the NASDAQ off 1.40% to 25520.24, and the Dow down 0.77% to 52146.42 as an AI-led megacap sell-off spread across risk assets.
Breadth was decisively negative with nine of eleven S&P sectors lower; only Energy (+1.70%) and Healthcare (+0.02%) finished green, while a bearish 1.20 SPY put/call volume ratio and negative-gamma regime underscored defensive positioning.

Market Commentary

Risk assets ended the week under pressure on Friday's close, extending into Saturday's futures read, as the market's AI leadership finally buckled. The NASDAQ shed 1.40% and the S&P 500 gave back 1.01% to 7457.69, with the pain concentrated in the megacap growth complex — NVDA -2.21%, MSFT -1.82%, AMD -1.03%, and META -2.79%. S&P 500 futures at 7497.75 (-1.06%) and NASDAQ futures (-1.55%) signal little appetite to catch the falling knife, and the negative-gamma GEX regime warns that dealer hedging will amplify directional moves near-term. The zero-gamma pivot sits at 675 on SPY, a level bulls need to reclaim to stabilize the tape.

The earnings backdrop turned hostile, headlined by NFLX collapsing -7.26% and single-handedly dragging Communication Services down 2.08%. That reinforces the Yahoo Finance 'Chart of the Day' thesis that the S&P 500 is breaking the earnings playbook — reactions to numbers have been asymmetric and punitive. Rotation was unmistakable: defensives held up, with Healthcare essentially flat (JNJ +1.23%, LLY +0.85%) and Energy the standout at +1.70%, driven by a violent +4.47% crude rally to $81.78 that powered VLO +3.13%, MPC +2.21%, and CVX +1.91%. Overseas, the Nikkei's -4.03% drubbing set a grim tone and confirms the global de-risking impulse.

The macro calendar delivered mixed signals. Friday's data showed Housing Starts surging +19% MoM to 1.427M (a big beat), but Building Permits fell -3% and Industrial Production YoY missed at 1.1%. The bright spot was consumer sentiment: the University of Michigan preliminary print jumped to 54.4 versus 51 expected, with Current Conditions rocketing to 54.9. However, the crude spike complicates the disinflation story just as attention pivots to the July 30 Core PCE (F: 0.3% MoM, 3.2% YoY) and the advance Q2 GDP read (F: 1.1%, down sharply from 2.1%).

The Fed is the dominant near-term catalyst. Prediction markets price a 95% probability of no change at the July 29 meeting, and an 84% chance of zero cuts for all of 2026 — a hawkish backdrop that leaves little cushion should inflation reaccelerate on energy. With the 25-delta skew at 4.0% (puts bid up) and the put/call volume ratio at 1.20, options positioning confirms genuine downside hedging demand, though ATM IV at 10.6% (IV rank 34) suggests the move has not yet triggered a full volatility panic. The implied move for the nearest expiry is a modest ±0.8%.

Into next week, the tape is fragile and headline-sensitive. Bulls will want to see megacap tech stabilize and dip-buyers reappear ahead of the FOMC, while the Energy bid — if sustained by geopolitical risk premium given elevated Polymarket odds around Iran (28% U.S. invasion probability before 2027) — is a double-edged sword: supportive for XLE constituents but a fresh inflation headwind. Watch the July 21 weekly ADP and July 23 jobless claims for labor-market confirmation, but the real fireworks await the July 29 Fed decision and July 30 PCE/GDP double-header.
